Eligibility Criteria & Point Weightage for the Chancenkarte:
There are two main paths to qualify for the Chancenkarte:
#1 Recognised Qualification:
The simplest method to become eligible for the Chancenkarte is to have an officially recognized German university degree or vocational qualification. In this case, you are exempt from the point system.
#2 Point-based System:
Basic requirements:
- A recognized degree. Or at least 2 years of recognized vocational training.
- Basic German (A1) or strong English (B2) proficiency as per the CEFR.
- Proof of sufficient funds to pay living expenses in Germany.
Point Weightage for the Chancenkarte:
- Qualifications: 4 to 6 Points are given for a university degree or vocational training (bachelor’s degree, technical training, etc.) and 1 for a shortage occupation.
- Job Experience: You can gain 2 to 3 points if you have relevant job experience in your area of expertise
- Language skills: Exhibiting strong English language abilities (B2 level or above) or German language competence (A1 level or higher) can score you up to 4 points.
- Age: The younger you are, the higher your score will be, i.e., 2 points for 34 or younger and 1 point if you’re between 35 and 39 years old.
- German connection: If you have studied, interned, or done voluntary work in Germany for a minimum of six months in the past, you may receive 1 point.
- Spouse/Partner: You receive 1 point if your spouse satisfies the Chancenkarte requirements as well.

How To Improve My Eligibility for the Chancenkarte?
- Boost Your Credentials: You might want to think about obtaining a second degree or certification.
- Boost Your Linguistic Proficiency: Enroll in German language courses to achieve the required A1 level or above. Fluency in English (B2 or above) is also helpful.

How to apply for the Chancenkarte?

1. Through an overseas German mission:
Should you now reside outside of Germany, please contact the German consulate or embassy in your home country. You will receive specific application forms and instructions. The application procedure will often involve:
- filling out an application form
- providing proof of a valid passport
- sending documentation of your schooling, employment experience, and German or English language certification
- providing proof of bank statements that convey you have enough money to maintain your living expenses in Germany.
2. At the Local Foreigners’ Registration Office:
This choice is relevant if you are legally residing in Germany and currently possess a different type of visa:
